You do not need a reason to learn this beyond curiosity, but it helps to see what it actually does on an ordinary Tuesday. Here are the jobs it quietly takes off your plate.

Writing the letter you have been putting off. A note to your grandson. A firm email to the energy company about a bill that looks wrong. A request to the council. You tell it, in your own words, what you want to say and how you want to come across, polite or pointed, and it gives you a clean draft. You change anything that does not sound like you, because it is your letter, and you send it.

Making a confusing letter make sense. Super statements, private health cover, a council rates notice, an insurance renewal full of fine print. You can read it out or type the bewildering bits in, and ask for it in plain English. Leave your account numbers, customer reference and anything personal out. You only need the wording explained, not your details handed over.

Planning a trip or a family do. A week in Tasmania, a lunch for fourteen with two who do not eat gluten, a route that avoids the freeway. It will build you an itinerary, a shopping list, a running order. Treat the facts as a starting point. Opening hours and prices change, so confirm those yourself before you rely on them.

Understanding a diagnosis or a medication in plain terms. When the doctor uses a word you did not catch, it can explain what it generally means and what questions are worth asking at the next appointment. It is not your doctor and never will be. It is the patient friend who helps you walk in better informed.

Learning something at your own pace. Watercolours, the ukulele, sourdough, conversational Italian, how your new phone works. It never sighs, never rushes you, and will explain the same thing five different ways until one lands.

Spotting a scam before it costs you. Paste in a suspicious text or email and ask whether it looks like a scam. It will flag the usual tells. The rule underneath all of this never bends: never share passwords, bank details, card numbers or ID. A real bank will not ask, and neither should anyone else.

This is genuinely learnable. The tools have only been around a couple of years, so nobody is behind. You are on time, not late.

Common questions about AI in later life

Am I too old to learn this? No. These tools only arrived a couple of years ago, so everyone is starting from roughly the same place. There is no class you missed. You type in plain words, at your own pace, and stop whenever you like. You are on time, not late.

Is it safe? I worry about scams. Used sensibly, yes. The one rule that matters is simple: never share passwords, bank details, card numbers or ID with it, the same as you would not with a stranger on the phone. The course also teaches you to spot a scam, so the tool becomes part of how you stay safe, not a risk to it.

Do I need to be good with computers? No. If you can type a text message or an email, you can do this. You open a website and write what you want in ordinary words. Nothing to install, no settings to wrestle, and no wrong way to ask.
